About Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM)

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) is the Irish Sea Fisheries Board, which is responsible for developing and promoting the Irish seafood industry.

Established in 1952, BIM’s primary role is to support the Irish seafood industry and its communities by providing training, advisory, research, and development services.

BIM works with all sectors of the industry, including fishing, aquaculture, processing, and marketing, to promote sustainability, innovation, and growth.

BIM also plays a key role in representing Ireland’s seafood interests at national and an international level.

Project Requirements

BIM collects data on various aspects of the industry – fishing, aquaculture, seafood processing and sector marketing.

This data is used to inform policy development, identify emerging trends, and promote the industry nationally and internationally.

In addition to publishing industry data, BIM also provides advisory services and training to the industry, helping to ensure that businesses are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

In support of this, BIM commissioned Compass Informatics to produce a range of business intelligence ‘dashboards’ for use by clients within the seafood sector. 

The objective of this project was to provide clients with cloud based insight to the data that BIM collects and manages.

Compass’ Solution – Industry Intelligence Dashboards

Compass Informatics developed a graphical solution which enabled the fusion of datasets from various sources for use in the Power BI data visualisation platform.

This allowed for the development of multiple Power BI Dashboards, which were subsequently integrated with the BIM Extranet website to provide seafood sector data visualisation.

The solution involved data investigation, extraction, quality assessment, centralisation, standardisation and fusion, and preparation for consumption by the Power BI visualisation platform. 

Dashboards were designed based on a client defined functional specification, with web maps for spatial visualisation. 

Post development, the solution was documented in detail, with support and training provided to BIM personnel who will maintain the data.

Solution Benefit

This solution provides BIM and their clients with a powerful tool for data-driven decision making, enabling users and stakeholders to quickly and easily analyse data and gain insight to the seafood sector in Ireland.

The industry data visualisations offer an accessible resource, permitting users to create custom visualisations quickly and easily, permitting interactive data filtering and drill-down and allowing users to explore data in near real-time. 

Users may now access a broad range of seafood industry charts, graphs, tables and maps – allowing them to create accurate and visually appealing reports and share key seafood industry insights.
